I guess that the Advocate watched the same version of the BOA meeting that the Leader-Herald did. No coverage of the face off between the Mayor and Alderman Van Campen over the Wood Waste peliminary injuction in either paper. How does that happen?
If anyone's interested, there's a half page ad on page 3 to rent a space from Boston Business Center. It includes an illustration of what I guess the building is supposed to look like after it's fixed up. |

| Was that renting space from Boston Business Center about the old city yards? No wonder your not hearing anything in any of the rags in Everett. $$$$$$$$$$$ |

There are number of pieces in this week's Advocate that everyone should be aware of. It'll take me a while to get them all posted but bear with me. Here's the first one:
Councillor Millie Cardello explains her position on Sweetser Circle beautification project
To the editor,
I want to explain why I questioned the work being done at Sweetser Circle. I asked questions at the regular meeting of the common council and the next morning I received a call from the mayor berating me for going against his and his wife's beautification project.
The mayor claims that I hurt his feelings. That was never my intent. I am not the type of person that would ever intentionally hurt anyone.
I questioned the project first and foremost because the circle belongs to the state and not the city of Everett. We have very generous benefactors who have donated money to the mayor's Beautification Fund and although I understand that even though we do not own the circle, we would like it to look nice, I do not see where at a time when money is tight, we should use our money to take care of the state's responsibilities. Also my concern is for the water being used to maintain the circle once it is done. Is there enough money to pay for the water and the ongoing maintenance of the project? Will the taxpayers be responsible to pay for it if there is not enough money in the Beautification Fund?
Another issue of concern is the state was aware of the problems of salt and sand destroying flowers there and therefore didn't use their funds to plant there. How will it be any different when the city plants flowers there.
We are living in a time when a lot of people's living expenses exceed their income. How do we concede to a project that might have the potential of costing the taxpayer more money?
How do we justify using these funds to beautify state property rather than the streets and parks that the city owns?
I apologize for hurting Mayor and Mrs. Carlo DeMaria's feelings but I do not apologize for asking questions and having concerns for the residents of Everett. I also do not appreciate being berated in a loud tone of voice by the Mayor for asking questions and showing concern for the people I represent.

You have got to be kidding me. She is one of the most level headed councilors. I agreed with all her questions. As a matter of fact, I'm not for the idea of using The City of Everett's Beatification Funds for State owned property. I would not be happy if I donated to the city of Everett, and it went on state property.
When Mr. Brandano did it, it was different story. He was an Everett resident that did it for free and donated his own time. He was always sweeping and cleaning. The bottom line is this is DCR property. Not a money maker for the Mayor's friends to bid on. And lastly, with everything going on in the world, who the hell does he think he is, talking to people like that? First Chuck DiPerri and now Millie Cardello? He must have a flower fetish. |

Millie is not my ward but I am proud that she is on the council. She is there for the taxpayers. She cares, and the phone call she received SHOULD HAVE BEEN a Thank you!
For looking out for the residents of the city, and putting their needs first. Not planting flowers on the taxpayers when so many (especially elderly) are scared because they have no idea how they are going to heat their homes, especially on state owned land. |

| Sounds like Millie is still upset that she didn't get the Veterans Service job.....which explains why she would do something as cheesy as writing a letter to the editor explaining her position on an obscure issue. And before you jump all over me....I call it cheesy because she already has a forum every other week to voice her opinion. She should leave the letter to the editor forum to the rest of us. |

The point I believe is that as a City Councilor, Ms.Cardello has a right and aduty to ask questions on behalf of the people she represents. For her to come under fire and reprimanded like a child for doing so is totally unacceptable. Who the hell does he think he is?
Good for you Millie.... keep asking those questions. This sham has to stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When are we going demand accountability..... Take an honest look everyone.... The two entities doing the work on behalf of doughboy are the ones that control the strings that move him..... Does anyone think they are doing this for a better Everett? NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its OUR time.... EVERETT and HER PEOPLE FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Cruller....I agree with you...but she should keep it in the council chambers. She cheapened herself and her point of view by writing that letter. I also think she could have done a better job of offering solutions instead of pointing out problems. Submerged tanks to collect rain water and low maintainance plantings are both options she could have suggested. Asking the mayors office to work with DCR to share the water costs is another option. Shouldn't we be asking her why she didn't talk about alternatives? |

why should she have kept it in the council chambers? Demaria did not. He was the one that called her, in her home, on her own time, for asking questions that people that elected her where interested in. Your defense all the time to Demaria boggles the mind. Your eyes he does no wrong. Go look at Mrs. Christiano that lives near Woodwaste and see her eyes.

Also from this week's Advocate, their latest love letter to FFF...Sorry....commentary.
Vindication...how sweet it is!
At long last, John Ricci and the handful of obstructionists who fought against the plan to build a new high school have finally been proved wrong by any shadow of a doubt...
First, Ricci and company did everything that they could to scuttle the effort to build a new high school in Everett. False rumors, innuendoes, court action -- they tried everything.
But the project spearheaded by Supt. of Schools Fred Foresteire and the members of the school committee, however, did finally become a reality.
Then the obstructionists predicted that the cost would balloon out of sight and Everett's share of the cost would be financially crushing. Well, they were wrong again
The state last week gave the city a check for $57.3 million to cover the state's share of the new high school's construction. That $57.3 million is in addition to the $25 million in interest that the city didn't have to pay.
What does it all mean? It means that we built our fabulous state-of-the-art new high school for less than 17% of the total cost. That's right -- the state picked up the tab for over 83% of the cost!
Mayor Ragucci six or seven years ago said that this was going to be a great deal for the city. HE WAS RIGHT!
Supt. Foresteire and the school committee, who had the political courage to stand up for the kids of Everett when it seemed that the criticism by the Ricci obstructionists was far outweighing public support for the proposal, are also to be congratulated. Why? Because THEY WERE RIGHT!
The building of a new high school is the best thing to happen in this city in a generation. It's a showpiece for the city.
And now, it's a proven fact.
Vindication...how sweet it is! |

From this week's Advocate, the Sounds of...Axes Grinding...Sorry....Everett column. Rumor has it that School Committee member Joe Guiliano will run against Matewsky next election. Joe is Stat-ic Smith's main man on the school committee -- and, will run for both seats. When he was told about the rumor, Wayne said no problem. Another rumor has it that people are fed-up with his buddy Stat Smith's double dipping. Stat, according to Stat, is pocketing plenty of dough while immigrants flock to his rooming houses, or rather, hostels, as they're called in foreign countries, So, naturally Stat-ic's self-proclaimed deep pockets, begs the question of why he doesn't donate his school committee salary back to the schools, or to a school connected service. Don't worry -- giving back the green stuff isn't one of Smith's fortes. Cheap! Cheap!
Not that I want to get into Rep. Stat-ic's business...although he is usually is in everyone else's business...but, one couldn't help notice his new coiffure at the most recent school committee meeting. Looking like a mannequin with his hair gelled down with a look from the 1930's...Stat-ic looked clean cut, and looked as if the clean cut new look fit right in with the clean cut look of the school committee members. It surely looked as if Rep. Smith visited Newbury Street, and sought out a hair-stylist who could give him the clean-cut gel hairdo he was sporting...no matter what it cost but, then again I doubt if Stat-ic would spend the dough in town. I'm sure he's hoping the gel will last a lifetime. Maybe he did go to Newbury Street, and paid for the expensive hairdo with one of his double dipping political salaries. Who knows?
And speaking of Rep. Stat-ic...he still has his hatchet out for the superintendent. But, we all know the Superintendent is very capable of taking care of himself. And just recently. I'm told, that Ald. Matewsky crossed paths with Rep. Stat-ic who held out his hand to Matewsky. They shook hands. As Ald. Matewsky walked away, Stat-ic mumbled "scumbag". Boy, for a state rep., you'd think that Smith would show a little class. Just think, Stat-ic has a 30's hairdo and continues his nasty 1930's politics of old. I'd bet you would never hear Rep. Connolly use that disgusting word. No way! |

Come on....elected officials call each other on the phone all the time. I'd bet your life on the fact that Millie and Carlo have talked a hundred times on the phone in her home. Had she not been passed over for the veterans position, she wouldnt have written the letter. I read the local rags on a regular basis and don't recall seeing any letters to the editor from Millie in the past....are you saying that "water in the rotary" is such a passionate issue for her that she needed to write a letter? I'm sorry, but it smells more like vindictiveness than passion.
Mrs Christiano's problems started long before Mayor Demaria took office. Something that gets lost in all of our postings is this: We all agree that the current state of affairs down at Wood Waste is not acceptable. For that one sentence alone, myself.... massdee .. tails...tetris...hallowed dreams..etc. are all in agreement. What we disagree on is the solution. For the last year of Mayor Regucci's term his plan was to ignore it until he got reelected and then address it. We all know how that turned out. Mayor Hanlons approach was to take a harder line and not deal with Wood Waste at all. As Mrs Christiano and her eyes can attest, that didn't work so well either. From what I can tell, Mayor DeMaria has a different approach. His approach is to find a quicker way move the piles and as a result, get Mrs Christiano the relief she deserves. While shutting Wood Waste down sounds like a great idea...I think we should all (as painful as it may be)put on our scumbag business man hat and try to guess what Wood Waste's next move will be if we shut him down. Aside from taking the city to court, the pile will still not go anywhere. The Newburyport dump site is his cheapest option for getting rid of those piles. Every scumbag businessman in the world would hold out until the final court decision is made. I have no idea how long it will take....it's been atleast 3 years so far (probably more) and to this point none of the administrations have helped Mrs Christiano. If the Mayor is able to find a way to negotiate the movement of those piles quicker than the pace of the courts then I believe he should do it. I bet Mrs Christiano's eyes appreciate his efforts. |

I chose to read the article. Not tear it apart to make excuses for bad behavior. I don’t think she wrote that for "water in the rotary". As far as your comments about her on the veterans fiasco of a search....there have been plenty of things that could have been written in retaliation. I don't think she waited for a rotary issue.
The fact is, it was written because she did not appreciate being berated in a loud tone of voice by the Mayor for asking questions and showing concern for the taxpayers. She had every right to ask questions with getting BERATED IN A LOUD TONE over flowers on state property.
The difference from years past right now with Wood Waste is those piles are not going anywhere and he is continuing receiving trash and hiding under the tarps. Within a week of the landfill being closed, a cease and desist order should have been implemented by this administration. Not continuing to accept waste with their blessing while the people still suffer.
I bet Mrs. Christiano's eyes would appreciate a cease and desist order. But no……we have a Mayor who is enabling him along with others on the council trying to make him look like he’s God’s gift to Everett over a rotary.
I’m tired of all this intimidation and I think Millie had a lot of guts to do what she did. The other Chicken Little’s on the common council can go back and hide under their beds and keep their mouths shut. They acted like big bullies with former Mayor Hanlon but now they are afraid and keep their mouths shut??? They should not be there at all. They should step down and stop hurting the residents and taxpayers of this city.
